Disability Rights Pennsylvania’s Statement on Coverage of U.S. Senate Race in Pennsylvania

Recent coverage of the Pennsylvania United States Senate race has focused on candidate Lt. Governor John Fetterman as he recovers from a stroke.  During interviews he has used closed captioning, which he also used in the recent debate.  The news coverage has been critical of the accommodations used by Fetterman.  The reporting is implies there is something wrong with using technology or other accommodations  This is not true.  Accommodations and accessibility benefit everyone.  The reporting is reinforcing stigma around disability, stroke recovery and is harmful to the disability community.

In addition, commentary both on social media and in the press has used ableist and derogatory language to describe disability.  Derogatory language used against people with disabilities is unacceptable. DRP will continue to advocate for those who are living with disabilities as they advocate for themselves and show up as their whole selves.  We will continue to advocate for a Commonwealth where people of all abilities are equal and free.

National Council on Disability Quarterly Meeting

Pennsylvanian Theo W. Braddy Appointed to NCD

The National Council on Disability (NCD) has announced the date and time of their next quarterly meeting. The NCD will meet on Thursday, February 16, 2023, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

NCD quarterly meetings take place via Zoom. Disability advocates can join the meeting using Zoom or the telephone number and passcode associated with Zoom. Registration is not required to attend the meeting, but registration is encouraged. ASL and CART have been arranged for the meeting.

NCD is an independent federal agency that advises federal agencies, Congress, and the President on issues impacting people with disabilities.

Last year, President Biden appointed Pennsylvanian Theo W. Braddy to the Council. Theo lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was the Executive Director of the Central Pennsylvania Center for Independent Living for over 30 years. Theo was recently hired as the new Executive Director of the National Council for Independent Living.

The agenda for the quarterly meeting has been released. You can view the full agenda by visiting www.disabilityrightspa.org and clicking on today’s #AdvocacyMatters segment. The agenda includes a staff report and a presentation, discussion and vote on policy project proposals.

There is always an opportunity for public comment. NCD welcomes public comments from individuals, businesses, providers, educators, parents, and advocates. NCD receives comments via email prior to the meeting. The deadline for submission of public comment is 5:00 pm on February 15, 2023. Public comments are addressed in the last half hour of the meeting.
